Can You Hear The Earth Sing?

"What are you doing Don Pancho?"

"I'm listening to the earth sing, mi'jita."

So begins the hauntingly lovely conversation between a little girl and her friend, the village elder, Don Pancho about the wonders of nature.  The whimsical notes of the "songs" the earth sings will tickle the imagination, and delight children as well as adults.  The implicit lesson about paying attention to our connection with nature, getting so quiet you can hear a "star's lullaby to the trees" is gently cloaked in lyrical word pictures that invoke the southwestern flavor and landcape that inspired the story.

Welcome to Kubabi

Sharing a reverence for nature with people and teaching our children about nature can sometimes seem too big, too hard, and far too elusive.  Nature is a big concept, hard to hold.  But nature herself helps us in this task by giving us the gift of small precious moments: a bird’s call in the still of morning, a hawk circling overhead with a rush of wing beats, a shaft of winter light on golden grasses, the deep inky blue of a mountain’s silhouette at dusk, the warm glow of old brick, or stars seen from a backyard tent.  Appreciation for nature is born and built of such moments.

Learning to pay attention to the inspiration that comes from these small moments is what the stories and poems on Kubabi are all about.  From the impressions and feelings that nature gives us in Can You Hear the Earth Sing, to the wonder of nature’s kaleidoscope of colors in Isle of Makai, to the night sky in the South Pacific in Moonbows and Other Wonders, each story was born of fleeting moments of beauty that touched my heart as a child and as an adult child.   These stories were born to celebrate those moments.

All of these whimsical stories are meant to be read and read aloud.  Words have been used to capture not only the look of nature, but the feel, the sound, the texture and the rhythm of nature. Photographs are one way of painting nature.  Words are another.  These words have been chosen to allow you to step into a moment of nature’s whimsy.  They are Mother Nature’s gifts to the children of the world, each and every one of us.

Enjoy and may each day bring you nature’s gifts.
